Charles H. McCartney, 87, Retired Industrial Engineer

Photo of Charles H. McCartney Charles H. McCartney, 87 of Lorain died on Friday, March 7, 2008 at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky following a brief illness.

Mr. McCartney was born in Lorain on July 12, 1920, the son of the late Adam & Elizabeth (nee Fradley) McCartney.

He was a lifelong resident of Lorain and a graduate of Lorain High School. He also graduated from Lorain Business College. He volunteered with the former Black River Volunteer Fire Department for 17 years.

He served in the US Army Air Force as a staff sergeant during WW II. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, EAME Theater Service Medal and the American Theater Service Medal. He was a member of VFW Post in Amherst.

Mr. McCartney was a retired industrial engineer at US Steel in Lorain. He retired in the early 1970's following 40 years of service.

He was a very active member of the former Christ United Methodist Church in Lorain. He participated in the actual construction of the church building.

Mr. McCartney was a renowned statewide for his racquetball abilities, winning several tournaments. He also enjoyed fishing.

Mr. McCartney is survived by his daughter Bonnie L. Manzari of New York, NY., sons Kenneth C. McCartney of Lorain, Keith D McCartney of Annandale, VA., Charles A. McCartney of Bakersfield, CA, one grandchild, and one brother Burt McCartney of Shaker Heights,

He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy (nee Stewart) McCartney on March 11, 2001, brothers Wayne McCartney, William McCartney, and Donald McCartney and two sisters Ella and Luella McCartney.

Friends may call Friday, March 14, 2008 from 2:00 PM until funeral time at 6:00 PM in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, Ohio 44052. The Rev. Matthew Darrin, co-pastor of the Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church will officiate.

Military honors will be provided at the close of the funeral service jointly by VFW Post 451 and the American Legion Post 30.

Burial will be later in the Ohio Veterans Home Cemetery in Sandusky.
