Stanley G. Pijor, 77, Past President and Chairman of the Board of Lorain National Bank

Stanley G. Pijor, age 77, of Sheffield Lake, Past president and Chairman of the Board of Lorain National Bank passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, March 27, 2008 following an extended illness.

Stan attended the Oberlin School of Commerce as well as the Ohio School of Banking and held a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration. He furthered his studies by completing courses in the Graduate Schools of Banking at both the University of Wisconsin as well as Columbia University.

He joined Lorain National Bank in February of 1955 and was appointed Vice President there in 1964 and Cashier in 1966. In 1968 he became Executive Vice President of the institution and was then named President in 1975. Mr. Pijor was also named Chairman of the Board in 1995. He retired from Lorain National Bank in 2000 and retired as Board Chairman in 2007.

A veteran of the United States Air Force, he served as a Financial Officer during the Korean Conflict where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.

He was extremely active in civic and community affairs and had formerly served as Chairman of the Lakeland Health Corporation, as well as Commissioner of the Lorain County Metropolitan Park District. In 2003, he received recognition as the Outstanding Citizen Board Member by the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association. In 2006, he was named recipient of the Eric Nord Award for Excellence in Community Service.

He had also served as President of the New Lorain Association Inc. as President of the Lorain County Community College Foundation, as 1987 Campaign Chairman for the Lorain County Free Clinic, as Campaign Chairman for the United Way, as President of the Lorain International Committee, as President of the Lorain Orchestra Association, as President of the Board of Trustees for the Lorain Public Library (1968-1975) as President of the Lorain County Clearing House Association (1974), as President of United Community Services of Lorain, as Trustee for Junior Achievement, as United Appeal Chairman – Commerce Division (1964), United Appeal Chairman – Advance Gifts (1965), and as United Appeal Chairman – National Firms (1966).

He also served as Goodwill Chairman, Industrial Chairman, as a Trustee for the Catholic Charities Corporation, as a member of the Lorain Port Authority, Chairman of Lakeland Medical Center, Trustee for the SJLC Holding Corporation, and was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Lorain Civic Center.

He was a member of the Lorain Lions Club where he served as Director for three years and treasurer for five years, was named Young Man of the Year in 1965, and was also a member of the Lorain Chamber of Commerce, the Western Reserve Development Council, and served as Chairman of the Ohio Bankers Insurance Fund. He was also the recipient of the Lorain County Community Action Award in 1978 and again in 1989.

A parishioner of the Catholic Church of Saint Peter in Lorain, Stan was also a member of Lt. McManus Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven Wanda (nee Jurowski), son David Pijor (Kathy) of Vienna, Virginia, Son Dennis Pijor (Kathleen) of Bay Village, son Donald Pijor (Denise) of Plymouth, Michigan, daughter Debra Laidlaw (David) of Chesterton, Indiana, granddaughters, Jennifer Burger (Tim), Brittany Laidlaw, Laura Pijor, Erika Weeks, Heather Pijor, Tiffany Pijor, Gwen Pijor, Lilly Pijor, and Sarah Pijor and grandsons Joshua Pijor, David Pijor and David Laidlaw.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jacob and Marie (nee Tasior) Pijor, by brother Julian R. “Jay” Pijor and by a sister Helen Betzel.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 30, 2008 from 1 to 6 p.m. and Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of his funeral mass at 10 a.m. in the Catholic Church of Saint Peter, 3501 Oberlin Avenue with the Reverend Kenneth Wolnowski officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain where joint military honors will be conducted by the officers and members of VFW Post #451 and America Legion Post#30 of Lorain.
