Stanley J. Mazur Sr., 91, Enjoyed the Outdoors
Stanley J. Mazur Sr, 91, of Lorain, died Thursday April 3, 2008 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain.
He was born May 2, 1916 in Tyre, Pennsylvania and had resided in Lorain since he was a youth.
He attended Lorain High School and later joined the Civilian Conservation Corps where he was stationed in Modoc County at Camp Juniper in Likely, California. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in the Philippines during WWII, receiving the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon with one bronze star and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
He worked at U.S. Steel as a Test-man in the Rolling Mill, retiring in 1980 after more than 40 years of service. He was a 50 - year member of St. Stanislaus Church in Lorain where he served devotedly as an usher. He also was recognized with the Man of the Year Award from the Holy Name Society. Stanley was a Color Guard for the AMVETS Post #47 in Lorain, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War, a lifetime member of the Polish American Citizens Club (PACC) as well as a member of the Italian American Veterans Post #1, and a member of the Croatian Club. He was a founding member of the Senior Action Coalition and made many trips to Washington, D.C. to advocate for senior citizens.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his love of the outdoors was evident in the hours he spent gardening, golfing, and playing with his dog, Penny. He was an avid reader and also enjoyed taking day trips to the country, attending dances, and visiting with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Garnet Kellogg-Mazur; one son, Stan Mazur (Joyce) of Elyria; one daughter Mary Ann Littell (David) of Avon; two stepsons, Richard Kellogg (Emily) of Middletown, CT and Ed Kellogg (Sheila) of Lorain. He also is survived by his grandchildren, Joe and Amy Mazur, and Justin Littell; his step-grandchildren Jonathan, Nathaniel, Steven, and Katie Kellogg; step-grandson, Vince Mendell; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife Mary M. Mazur (nee Zvosec) in 1980, and his parents Joseph and Victoria Mazur (nee Bugaj), brothers Steve and John Mazur and a sister Vuldeen Hudak.
The family will receive friends Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo_Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. The Rev. David A. Novak, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the VFW Post #451 and American Legion Post #30 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
