Mary Margaret Michaud, 87, Traveled the World
Mary Margaret Peets Michaud, USN, Ret., 87, passed away Sunday Morning, April 6th at Avon Oaks Caring Community, Avon, Ohio after a two year illness.
She was born March 3, 1921 in Lorain, Ohio; she graduated from St. Mary Academy, Lorain in 1939.
Mary Margaret worked at Woolworth’s Five and Dime Store on Broadway in Lorain and for the City of Lorain Treasurer’s Office prior to enlistment in the United States Navy in 1944.
She traveled the world, being stationed in and visiting many places including: London, the Holy Lands, San Francisco, Long Beach, Pensacola, Washington, DC, to name but a few. Mary Margaret served for 26 years retiring on the deck of The USS Constitution (Old Ironsides), in Boston in 1970.
She met her future husband, Robert Frenchy Michaud, also a Navy Chief, while stationed in San Francisco during the early 60’s. Years later, they reunited in Boston where they married in 1970. Married for 35 years, they resided in Westport, Massachusetts. She came to Avon after the death of her husband.
She was a member of St. George Parish in Westport, Massachusetts, she rejoined St. Mary of the Lake in Lorain. Mary Margaret enjoyed gardening, cooking, homemaking, and was deeply religious, being a source of grace and faith for her extended family. She was a member of (LCBA) Lady’s Catholic Benevolent Association and Fleet Reserve Association.
Among the survivors, her sisters, Jane Irene Vecchio, Avon Ohio, and Lt. Col. Elizabeth Anne Peets, USA, Ret., Sebastian Florida, Her niece Mary Jane Barile, great- niece, Jennifer L. Barile and great -nephew, Thomas A Barile all of Euclid, Ohio and many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Michaud, on April 26, 2006, sister, Juliet Frances Peets, September 2006, her parents Thomas Andrew and Juliet Frances (nee Porter) Peets.
Friends may call Wednesday from 2:00 to 6:00 PM in the Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain, a Christian Wake Service at 3:30 PM. Rev. Fr. Ken Wolnowski, pastor of the Catholic Church of Saint Peter, Lorain will officiate.
Friends may also call Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM in the Auclair Funeral Home, 690 Main Street, Fall River, MA. Funeral mass will be Saturday at 10:00 Am in Saint George Catholic Church, 12 Highland Ave., Westport, MA. His Eminence Seán Patrick Cardinal O'Malley, OFM Cap, Archbishop of Boston will officiate. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River, MA.
