Eleanor E. Novello, 93, Charter Member of Lakeland Women's Club
Eleanor E. Novello (nee Finnerty), 93, of Lorain, died Friday April 18, 2008 at her residence in Anchor Lodge Assisted Living in Lorain.
She was born November 27, 1914 in Cleveland, Ohio and had resided in Lorain for the past 62 years.
Eleanor was a 1934 graduate of Holy Name High School in Parma Heights and a 1937 graduate of the St. Vincent Charity Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland where she received her degree as a Registered Nurse.
Eleanor worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Vincent Charity Hospital and St. John Hospital in Cleveland.
She was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and made communion visits to area nursing homes. She was a member of the St. Peter Holy Name Society, the Spiritual Life Committee, the Renewal Group and Senior Citizens Group, all of the church. When the new St. Peter Church was being built on Oberlin Avenue in Lorain, Eleanor spearheaded a fund drive for the new organ at the church.
Eleanor was a charter member of the Lakeland Women’s Club in Lorain and served on the first committee of the International Association of Lorain to organize the International Festival. She was also a member of the Colony Club and Gramezelles, both of Lorain and the St. Francis of Assisi mission group that helped cook and serve meals for Catholic Charities in Lorain.
She is survived by her sons Dr. Joseph R. Novello and his wife Luba of Washington, DC and Donald A. Novello of San Francisco, California, daughter Eileen Novello of Amherst, granddaughter Holly Wiersma-Elwes and her husband Cassian of Los Angeles, California and step great granddaughters Airelle & Lucie Elwes, both of Los Angeles. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Augustine J. Novello in 2002, parents Andrew & Ellen Finnerty (nee Gallagher), brothers John, Farrell, George and Andrew Finnerty and sisters Alice Watkins, Anna Mae Miller and Vernelda Toomey.
The family will receive friends Monday 3-8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where the St. Peter Holy Name Society and the St. Francis of Assisi Mission Group of St. Peter Church will recite the rosary prior to viewing time on Monday at 2:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
