Juan Fernandez, 86, US Steel Retiree: Jack-of-all-Trades
Juan Fernandez, age 86, of Lorain, died Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at his son’s home in Chicago following an extended illness. Juan was born in Riviera, Spain on March 17, 1922 and has been a resident of Lorain for the past 55 years.Juan was employed at US Steel in Lorain for 18 years, retiring in 1985. Prior to that, his work included construction and he served as a merchant marine in Spain before moving to the United States.
A parishioner of St. Peter’s church in Lorain, Juan was passionate about life. He was a jack-of-all-trades; just as likely to fix a friend’s plumbing as to make his own wine. Most of all, Juan reveled in the moments spent with family and friends. He was an active grandfather and passed down his relish for working in the garden, and just tinkering at the workbench, to all the kids.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine, of 43 years; son John Fernandez, his wife Nicole, and their children Maximo, Enzo and Rocco of Chicago, Illinois; daughter Rosemarie Fernandez, her husband Blas Vega, and their children Blas, Sofia, and Daniel of Madrid, Spain; daughter Ana Gotsis, her husband Peter Gotsis and their children George & Isabela of Amherst, Ohio.
The family will receive friends Sunday 5-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. A funeral mass will be held Monday at 10:00 am at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. Burial will follow.
