Jesus Ortiz, 95, Member of the United Steel Worker's Local 1104, Lorain

Photo of Jesus Ortiz Jesus Ortiz, 95 of Lorain, died Monday, July 21, 2008 in Lake Pointe Health Care in Lorain following a lengthy illness.

He was born December 21, 1912 in Jayuya, Puerto Rico. Jesus arrived from Jayuya in 1948 to work at U. S. Steel Lorain Works. He retired in 1971 as a brick layers helper.

Mr. Ortiz was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain where he an Auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary, the Holy Name Society and the Cursillo Movement. He was also a member of the United Steel Worker’s Local 1104, Lorain. He enjoyed gardening, reading and praying the Rosary.

Among the survivors are his sons Primo Ortiz of Lorain, Angel Ortiz of Oberlin and Jesus Ortiz, Jr. of Knox, Indiana; daughters Dolores “Lola” Marrero of Poinciana, Fla. and Angela Mendez of Lorain; 24 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and 21 great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Emilia (nee Gonzalez) in 2002; daughter Sila Domingo Ayala; parents Angel and Gregoria (nee Guzman) Ortiz; brothers Juan Ortiz, Serafin Ortiz Cruz Ortiz, Silo Ortiz and Benigno Ortiz; great grandson Jose "Chequi" Marrero III and a nephew Luis Ortiz.

Funeral services will be Mon. July 14 with closing prayers in the funeral home at 11:15 AM followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 PM in Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Ave. Lorain. The Rev. Fr. William A. Thaden, Pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
