Robert T. Rattigan, 72, Retired Substitute Teacher

Photo of Robert T. Rattigan Robert T. Rattigan, 72, of Lorain, died unexpectedly on Monday, August 4, 2008 in the emergency at Community Regional Medical Center in Lorain.

He was born June 21, 1936 in Cambridge, Massachusetts and had resided in Lorain for the past 2 years.

Robert served with the US Coast Guard during the Korean War as a radio operator and later taught radio operation at the US Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May, New Jersey.

In 1962 he received his BA in Finance from Boston College. He held different jobs with financial companies in various cities and also served as editor of In Magazine in Monterey, California. Later he worked as a substitute teacher in middle schools in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Boston, Massachusetts and Lorain where he retired in 2007.

He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed traveling to Europe and Ireland. He was an accomplished artist and made many paintings. He attended Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years Helen L. Rattigan (nee Paxton) of Lorain, stepdaughters Rebecca L. Boone of Lorain and Victoria Boone of Wellington, stepson Richard Boone of Lorain, daughters Elizabeth Wampler of Boston, Heather Langone of Los Angeles and Laura Dotson of San Francisco, 8 grandchildren, sisters Joan Riordan of Connecticut, Ann Wallett and Alice Rattigan, both of Massachusetts and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Frederick and Alice Rattigan (nee Mahoney) and brother Frederick “Teddy” Rattigan.

The family will receive friends Friday from 9:00 am until the time of prayer services at 10:00 am at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. A mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 2428 Elyria Ave., Lorain. The Rev. David A. Novak, pastor, will officiate. At the conclusion of mass military honors will be conducted by the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of Lorain. Cremation will follow.
