Ludwig V. Matotek, 84, Lake Terminal Railroad Retiree
Ludwig V. Matotek, 84, of Amherst, died Sunday, August 10, 2008 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a brief illness.He was born August 27, 1923 in Lorain and had resided in Amherst for the past 55 years moving from Lorain.
Mr. Matotek served with the US Army during World War II as a Private First Class in the Pacific Theater.
He worked at the Lake Terminal Railroad in Lorain as a Conductor and Assistant Train Master for 37 years retiring in 1983. He also worked part-time as a corporal on the Amherst Police Department for 13 years.
Mr. Matotek was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst, the Sheffield Lions Club, American Legion #118 in Amherst, VFW Post #1662 in Amherst, NARVE, Knights of Columbus Council #637 of Lorain and the AARP. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, being outdoors, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandson.
He is survived by his sons Dennis C. Matotek and wife Shelly of Amherst and Stephen J. Matotek and wife Barbara of Amherst, daughter Michele M. Bartlome and husband James of Amherst, grandchildren Jeremy and wife Teresa, Melissa, Jillian and husband Mike and Scott, great grandson Aiden, companion Fran Bradley of Lorain, sister-in-law Evolie Matotek of Lorain, brother-in-law Bill Sabo of Avon and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Olga Matotek (nee Obreza) on Aug. 22, 2006, parents Steve and Mary Matotek (nee Vranic), sisters Helen Sabo and Catherine Szeto and brother John Matotek.
The family will receive friends Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. The Rev. Lawrence Martello, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
