Bert A. Karney, 97, Enjoyed His Vegetable Garden

Photo of Bert A. Karney Bert A. Karney, 97 of Sheffield Village died Thursday, September 4, 2008 in Seasons of Life Hospice, Parma following a lengthy illness.

He was born November 22, 1911 in Shickshinny, PA He came to Lorain in the Early 1940's He Moved to Sheffield Village in 1951.

Mr. Karney retired in 1973 as a rolling mill crane operator at U. S. Steel, Lorain Works. He worked there for over 30 Years.

He served in the Army as a medic in of New Guinea. He earned the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star, American Campaign Metal and the World War II Victory Metal.

Mr. Karney was a Member of Saint Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Elyria Township where he was a member of the churches' Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the United Steel Workers Local 1104 Lorain. For years he and his late brother Joe would volunteer as grounds keepers for the church. He enjoyed his vegetable garden, playing his harmonica, listing and dancing to big band music and polkas.

He will be missed by his daughter Roberta M. Hoff of Seven Hills, brother John Karney of Amherst, sister Marie Bailey of Springvale, CA, his grand children Jason R (Kim) Hoff of and Kristie M. Hoff - Schlaegel both of Parma.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years Barbara M. Nee Kuhn) Karney in 2002, his parents Bert A. and Mary (nee Kottage) Karney, brothers Les Karney and Joseph Karney and a sister Barbara O'Connor.

His family will receive friends Sunday, September 7, 2008 from 4 to 8 PM in the Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain (440) 277-8164. Where the Holy Name Society will pray the Rosary Sunday afternoon at 4:30 PM.

Funeral services will be Monday, September 8, 2008 with closing prayers in the funeral home at 9:30 AM then 10:00 AM Mass Of Christian Burial In Saint Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, 41295 North Ridge Road East, Elyria Township. Rev. Fr. James Ols, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. Where the Amherst Veteran Military Honor Guard will conduct military Honors.
