Veronica C. Matyas, 93, Cook and Baker

Photo of Veronica C. Matyas Veronica C. Matyas (nee Smith), 93, of Lorain, passed away Wednesday October 1, 2008 at Northridge Heath Center in North Ridgeville.

She was born November 28, 1914 in Heilwood, Pennsylvania. She moved to Lorain when she was 2 years old and had resided in Lorain County her entire life.

Veronica attended Holy Trinity Catholic School in Lorain and was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Ladies Guild.

She was a cook and baker by trade. Some of her restaurants were Vera’s Luncheon on Grove Avenue in Lorain in 1959, Grandma’s Inn on Rt. 113 in the Trading Post in South Amherst, Giovanni’s Pizza on Grove Avenue in Lorain from 1960-1966 and Tina’s Pizza on Pearl Avenue in Lorain in the 1960’s.

Veronica enjoyed cooking, baking, crafts, knitting, shopping and playing cards with her family. She collected dolls and angels and had a love for animals.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years George S. Matyas, Sr. of Lorain, sons: George Matyas, Jr. and Samuel Matyas, both of Lorain, daughters: Rose Matyas of North Ridgeville, Kathleen Stuckert of Florida, Shirley Hill of West Virginia, Linda Grasso of Youngstown and JoAnn Kovacs, Frances Henvener and Marion Hluszti all of Lorain County and Betty Ann Lane of North Carolina, many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and sister Agnes Dobis of Port Clinton.

She was preceded in death by her parents Michael and Elizabeth (nee Feco) Smith (aka Schmidt), sisters Elizabeth "Betty" Iwanicki, Helen Timko, Ethel Kopronica and Mary Bertsch, brothers John Smith, Michael "Jack" Smith and Thomas Smith, children Stanley and Michael Yourkvitch.


The family will receive friends Sunday, October 5, 2008, from 2-4, 7-9 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where the Holy Trinity Altar & Rosary Society will recite the rosary Sunday at 3:00 pm. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial Monday at 10:00 am. The Rev. David A. Novak, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
