Alan J. Guzik, 74, Owner of Energy Management Specialists

Photo of Alan J. Guzik Alan J. Guzik, age 74, of Avon, passed away on Tuesday October 21st following an extended illness. He was born in Lorain on August 8th, 1934.

He graduated from Lorain High School as a member of the Class of 1951 and had been a resident of Lorain until 1990. He started his adult life working for eleven years in the Fuel and Power Department of United States Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works. He was most recently employed as the owner of Energy Management Specialists of Cleveland, a company that he founded in 1980.

In business he was passionate about his training and was honored by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America with their Excellence in Training Award and was also the recipient of the Best Contractor to Work for Award. He was a forty-two year member of R.S.E.S. where he served as Past President and Education Committee Chair; Alan was a licensed contractor in the State of Ohio and was a member of the Association of Energy Engineers, the United Service Alliance, the Unified Group, and a Board Member of the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center.

Shine, as he was known to many in his family, was a member of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Avon; he had previously been a thirty-year parishioner of Saint John Roman Catholic Church in Lorain where he was active as an usher, member of the finance committee, and was acknowledged as Holy Name Man of the Year in 1973.

A member of the Southview High School Booster Club, Mr. Guzik was also a member of the Maserati Club and had the privilege of driving a lap at the fabled Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-three year Clara (nee Popiel), sons Alan (Kathy) of Avon, Joseph (Sandy) of Grafton, and John of Avon Lake, daughters Kathleen (Tom) Wilson and Karen (Vince) Piccolomini both of Bay Village, and Kristine Guzik of Avon, grandchildren Mallory and Mark Wilson, Monica, Carolyn, Claire, Allison, Alex, and Noah Guzik, step-grandchildren Zach, Chris, and Kyle Nagel, and sisters Carol Szabo of Elyria and Marlene Chrulski of Lorain.

He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Stephanie (Nee Nowakowski) Guzik, and by a sister Joan Hritsko.

Visitation will be Friday, October 24, 2008, from 3:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of his funeral mass at 9:15 in Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church, 2640 Stoney Ridge Road, Avon. The Reverend Thomas Cleaton, Pastor of Saint Mary Parish, and the Reverend Robert Glepko, Pastor of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, Lorain, will concelebrate. Entombment will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Avon.
