Suzanne R. Hammond, 59, Enjoyed Traveling and Reading
Suzanne R. "Suzie" Hammond, (nee Szalay) age 59, of Amherst, died Sunday October 26th, 2008 at Community Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Lorain on April 2, 1949 and had been a resident of Amherst for the past four years having moved from Sheffield Township.
Suzie was a graduate of Clearview High School as a member of the Class of 1967 and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Cleveland State University in 1987. She subsequently joined the staff of Holy Trinity Parochial School of Avon in 1988 and served as a fifth grade teacher there for ten years retiring in 1998.
Mrs. Hammond was extremely active as a member and Past President of the Clearview High School Athletic Booster Club and also served as a member and Past President of the Clearview Alumni Association.
She was a parishioner of Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister.
In her free time she enjoyed quilting, playing golf, and bowling. Additional interests included travel, shopping, and reading, with a special focus on the classic pieces of literature.
Suzie is survived by her husband of forty years Roger P. "Rocky" Hammond, sons Jeffrey T. and his wife Stephanie residing in Columbiana, Ohio, Christopher C. and his wife Kate residing in Baltimore, Maryland, and Benjamin J. and his wife Tatiana residing in Dublin, Ohio, grandchildren Elise, Grace, Regina, Henry, Josephine, Julian, and Quinn, by brothers Frank B. Szalay and his wife Barbara of Sheffield Village, John Szalay and his wife Tammy of Lorain, and sister Mary Helen Trent and her husband Dan who resides in Amherst.
Mrs. Hammond was preceded in death by her father Frank J. Szalay in 1999 and by her mother Anna B. (nee Caco) Szalay in 2007.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Wednesday beginning with closing prayers offered in the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. A mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. in Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 41295 North Ridge Road, Elyria Township. The Reverend James R. Ols, Pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
