John A. Herron, 78, Enjoyed Woodworking & Sporting Events
John A. Herron, age 78, of Lorain, died Thursday November 6, 2008 at the Wesleyan Village of Elyria following a brief illness.
He was born in Lower Plymouth, Nova Scotia on April 11, 1930 and had been a resident of Lorain since 1958 coming from Cambridge, Massachusetts.
John was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps serving as a Corporal during the Korean Conflict; he was a participant in the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir and was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, the Presidential Unit Commendation with one Bronze Star, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a former member of Mullen-Murray Post # 451 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lorain.
Mr. Herron was employed as a truck driver for the Ford Motor Company retiring in 1988, following a career that spanned thirty-three years with the automaker. He was a member of United Autoworkers Local # 425.
A parishioner of Saint Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Lorain, his hobbies included woodworking and attending the sporting events his grandchildren participated in. Additional interests included going on gambling junkets.
Survivors include daughters Gail Stephanchick and her husband Richard of Lorain, Tracy Toth and her husband Joseph residing in Lagrange, Kentucky, grandsons Jonathon Stephanchick and Michael Toth, granddaughters Jessica Stephanchick and Kaitlyn Toth, and a brother James L. Herron of South Hill, Virginia.
John was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Betty (nee Nally) in May of this year, by his father James Herron in 1966, by his mother Cornelia (nee Herebout) Herron in 1976, and by his sister Shirley Gorham.
Visitation will be Sunday, November 9, 2008, from 4-8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel with the Reverend Kevin Saylor, Pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Lorain presiding. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township, where military honors will be conducted by the officers and members of Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
