Mary A. Engelhardt, 80, Meals on Wheels and Church Volunteer

Photo of Mary A. Engelhardt Mary A. Engelhardt, 80, (nee McGinnis) of Amherst passed away on Sunday morning, November 23, 2008 at her home following a long illness.

Mrs. Engelhardt was born in Wyoming, Ohio on March 28, 1928, the daughter of the late Nolan "Dutch" and Mildred (nee Finch) McGinnis. An Amherst area resident for 60 years, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in Lorain. She was also a member of the M&J's, and enjoyed opening her home to family and friends, an old farm house that she and her husband renovated into a beautiful home.

She volunteered with the Election Board as a pollster, the Meals on Wheels Program, a reading literacy program and several church committees.

She loved golf, bowling and was especially fond of the Golden Retriever breed of dogs. She was a Girl Scout and Brownie Troop leader. She was a softball coach that will be always be remembered for her love of the game and her protectiveness of her players. She enjoyed playing pinochle.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years Jack Engelhardt, daughters Liz (Tom Vaughan) Engelhardt of Seattle, WA, Pat (Charles) Walder of Hudson, Peg Engelhardt of Columbus, Amy (Chris White) Engelhardt of Akron, granddaughters Lisa and Audrey Vaughan, brothers Bob (Ferne) McGinnis of CT, Dave (Cecilia) McGinnis of Arizona, Dan (Amy) McGinnis of FL, sister Caroline Greene of Ohio, brother-in-law Bob Engelhardt of Vermilion and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother Jim McGinnis.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 from 4-7 PM at the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain.

A Celebration of Her Life will be held at the St. John's United Church of Christ, 715 Reid Ave., Lorain on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Philip Kunz officiating.

The family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the St. John's United Church of Christ Children's Program, 715 Reid Ave., Lorain, Ohio 44052 or the Alzheimer's Association, 37500 Harvest Ave., Avon, Ohio 44011.
