Florence R. Gnizak, 89, Enjoyed Sewing and Quilting

Photo of Florence R. Gnizak Florence R. Gnizak (nee Bonk), age 89, of Amherst Township, died Tuesday December 2, 2008 at the New Life Hospice of St. Joseph following a brief illness.

Mrs. Gnizak was born in Lorain on September 17, 1919 and had been a resident of Amherst Township for more than fifty years; she had previously resided in Lorain and Henrietta Township.

A graduate of Lorain High School, Florence was employed as a production assistant at the former Worthington Ball Factory in Elyria.

She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst where she was a member of the Lamplighter’s Prayer Group as well as the Altar & Rosary Society.

Known for her loyal support of religious missions and the recitation of her daily prayers, her hobbies included sewing, quilting, travel, camping, and enjoying polka music. Additional interests included bingo, playing cards, and gardening.

She leaves to cherish her memory, daughters Geraldine Klepek and her husband Michael of Vermilion, Louise Berrington and Patricia Wright both of Elyria, Diane Melody and her husband Gary residing in Florissant, Colorado, and Catherine Varner and her husband Joseph of Amherst, sons Joseph Gnizak and his wife Lynn of Louisville, Kentucky and Charles J. Gnizak, PhD and his wife Renee of Hays, Kansas, eighteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and a sister Dorothy Sklarek of Lorain.

Florence was preceded in death by her loving husband George in 1994, by her devoted parents Frank and Anna (nee Basinski) Bonk, by a sister Josephine Zimmerman, and by brothers Willie in infancy and Stanley.

Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Saturday beginning at 9:45 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of a funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. The Reverend Lawrence Martello will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
