Bill Flynn, 81, Former 9th Ward Councilman

Photo of Bill  Flynn Bill “Red” Flynn, 81 of Lorain, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008 in Community Regional Medical Center, Lorain following a brief illness.

He was born July 10, 1927 in Zanesville and came here in 1949. He attended Dresden High School in Dresden and Lorain Business College.

Bill was a World War II and Korean War veteran, originally serving in the Navy in 1945 and concluding his service in the Army in 1953.

He worked as a machinist until 1978 for Thew Shovel Co., he worked there 29 years. From 1978 until 1982 Bill worked for U. S. Steel, # 4 seamless mill, Lorain. He was an employment counselor for the United Steel Workers Dislocated Workers Program, starting in 1982 for 10 years. He was currently employed in Lorain County Auditor's office Sales Review Program.

Bill served as 9th Ward Lorain City Councilman, representing South Lorain for 10 years. He also served as a vice president of the Lorain City Democratic Party, and as a precinct committeeman.

He was a member of the United Steel Workers Locals 1104 and 1242, Lorain. For 20 years he served as the chairman of the Thew Shovel greveance committee. He was a Life Member of the AMVETS Post 22 in Vermilion.

Bill was a member of the First Evangelical Luthern Church Lorain. He was a Little League and a F League Coach for 10 years. He enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing with his grandchildren. He loved music and playing his harmonica.

Among the survivors are his wife of 55 years Frances “Honey Girl” Flynn (nee Hart); children Patricia Ann (David) McCue of Lorain, Sandra Jo Flynn of Lorain, William F. (Patricia) Flynn of Wellington, Becky Lynn (Barry) Whitfield of Lorain and Susan Raible of Lorain; seven granddaughters, ten grandsons, two great granddaughters and twin great grandson; sister Wilma Wiles of Beaver, Oregon and a brother John W. Flynn of Zanesville.

He was preceded in death by his parents James W. and May U. (nee White) Flynn; brother Eugene Flynn and a nephew Jame Lee Flynn.

His family will receive friends Tuesday Dec. 30, 2008, from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. in the Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain, (440) 277-8164. The Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct Military Honors Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.

Friends may also call Wednesday 9 a.m. until time of funeral service at 10 a.m. in the First Evangelical Luthern Church, West 6th Street and Washington Ave., Lorain. Rev. Dr. Linwood H.Chamberlan, Jr will officiate. Burial will follow Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, Amherst Township.

Bill’s family suggests memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 1893, Memphis, TN 38101-9950.
