Victor A. Fabiniak, 84, Member of PLAV Post 38

Victor A. Fabiniak, 84 of Vermilion, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009 in Regency Hospital, Middleburgh Heights after a 5 month battle with cancer.

He was born July 26, 1924 in Canton, Ohio and has been a Vermilion resident since 1948 moving from Lorain.

He worked as a laborer and laborer foremen for 35 years for TJ Hume Construction Co. retiring in 1986.

Mr. Fabiniak graduated from Canton McKinley High School in June 1943. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force serving during WWII as a B-17 tail gunner with the 15th Air Force 99th Bomb Group and flew 24 missions before becoming a prisoner of war.

Victor was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Vermilion, where he was an usher. He was a member of the PLAV Post 38, Lorain where he had been the Past Commander and held several other offices. He was the State of Ohio Polish Legion of American Veteran of the Year. He was a PLAV State V.A.V.S. representative for the Ohio Veterans Home; PLAV membership organizer and delegate to Lorain Veterans Council, Post #38 Color Guard. He was a life member of V.F.W. Post #7576, and AMVETS Post #22 in Vermilion, Charter Member of the American Legion, 15. AF Historical Society, 99 Bomb Group Historical Society, Air Force Gunner Association, Swiss Internees Association, and Ex-POW Association. He enjoyed yard work and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Linda Fabiniak of Kernersville, NC; grandson, Brian Fabiniak; granddaughters, Renee Simmons, Beth Shull, and Michelle Fabiniak; great granddaughters, Katelynn, Meaghann, and Alexandra Fabiniak; and great grandson, Nathan Fabiniak.

Preceding him in death by his wife, Frances in 1995; his parents, Michael and Blanch (nee Andreczak) Fabiniak; brothers, Casmer, Stanley and Chester Fabiniak and sisters, Jennie Zeleski and Blanch Jasonoski.

Friends may call Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion. A Christian wake service will be held at 3:30 p.m. and the Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military services at 8:45 p.m.

Prayers will be said in the funeral home on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009 at 11 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange St. Vermilion at 11:30 a.m., Father Francis Speier, pastor of St. Mary in Norwalk will officiate. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.
