David J. Karney Sr., 91, Enjoyed Woodworking

Photo of David J. Karney Sr. David J. Karney, Sr., age 91 of Lorain, died peacefully on Wednesday Jan. 14th, 2009 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph.

He was born in Lorain on Jan. 27th, 1917 and had been a life-long resident of the city.

Mr. Karney was employed as a bricklayer in the Masonry Department of United States Steel Corporation’s Lorain Cuyahoga Works; he retired in 1979 following a career that spanned forty-three years with the steel producer. Dave also worked as a carpenter which continued as both a hobby and a vocation into his retirement.

He was an active parishioner of St. Ladislaus Catholic Church in Lorain where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and volunteered in the kitchen making sausage for various fund-raising events.

He enjoyed woodworking, spending time with his friends, children, grandchildren, and great grandsons.

Dave had a young spirit, strong faith, deep concern for others, and lived every day to its fullest.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years Helen (nee Matyas), by his son Dave Karney, Jr. (wife Linda) of Amherst, daughter Jolyn Lines (husband Tom) also of Amherst, grandchildren Jamie Back, Jason Karney, Allison Wirth, and Jennifer Karney, great grandsons Josh, Alex, Nikolas, and Brandon, his sister Helen Litkovitz of Lorain, and long-time friend John Jachym (wife Teresa) also of Lorain.

He was preceded in death by his parents Stephen and Helen (nee Kun) Karney, and by brothers Joseph, Louis, Bert, and Steve Karney, Jr.

Visitation will be Friday from 2-6 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Saturday beginning with closing prayers offered in the funeral chapel at 9:30 a.m. A funeral mass will follow at 10 a.m. in St. Ladislaus Catholic Church, 1412 East 29th Street, Lorain. The Reverend James Schmitz, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
