Donald Louden Holloway, 85, WW II Veteran

Don was born on Sept. 5, 1923 in Lorain, and had been a life-long resident of the city until moving to The Abbewood in Elyria in 2005.
He attended Lorain City Schools and graduated from Lorain High School.
Mr. Holloway was a World War II veteran serving in the US Army in the 5th Armored Division. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the D-Day invasion at Normandy. While serving in Germany, he befriended a German family whom he kept in contact with until his death.
He subsequently was employed at US Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works as an electrician. Don eventually retired in 1986 following 44 years of service with the steel producer. He was a member of the Steelworkers Union.
A member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter, Lorain where he served as an usher for many years, he also volunteered at the former St. Joseph Hospital. He enjoyed music, especially big band music. Other interests for him were dancing, bicycling, roller skating, square dancing, swimming, watching football, discussing politics, traveling and spending time with his angels.
His family was always his first priority and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by sons James (Pat) Holloway, Amherst and Brian (Gloria) Holloway Douglasville, GA and daughter Barbara Holloway, Fountain Hills, AZ. Grandchildren James (Angie) Holloway, North Ridgeville, Scott (Emeri) Holloway, Okinawa Japan, Jennefer (Joe) Reitzel, Amherst and Christine (Bernard) Lallo-Kuminkowski of Avon Lake. He is survived by 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Helen Gloria (nee Ziegman) in October of 1994. By his parents Floyd and Elizabeth (nee Marsh) Holloway, brothers Earl Holloway, Floyd Elmer Holloway and sisters Alice (John) Birich, Valoris (Frank) Bielowski, and Doris (Charles) Scrivens.
The family of Don Holloway would like to thank the compassionate caregivers he encountered at Denise’s Adult Care Home and The Abbewood of Elyria.
The family will receive friends Tuesday 4-8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Chuck Henkle, associate pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
