Helen J. Aquilla, 99, Enjoyed Spending Time with Family

She was born in Lorain on May 14, 1909 and had been a resident of Lorain for most of her life; she had spent much of the last fifteen years in Florida.
Mrs. Aquilla was a parishioner of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria Township and a charter member of St. Ann’s / St. Ladislaus Ladies Auxiliary Lodge # 287 of the Knights of John.
Her hobbies included bowling, crocheting, and solving both jigsaw and word search puzzles. She also enjoyed watching Notre Dame football games as well. Additional interests included spending time with her family and cooking for them as well as friends.
Survivors include children John R. Aquilla (wife Joanne) of Lorain, Donna K. Thomas (husband Jim) of Oldsmar, Florida, and Eugene J. (wife Mari) Mason of Lorain, grandchildren Rick, Rob, and John Mutnansky, Rosemarie Aquilla, Jean Raab, Barbara Butler, Danny Mason, Kay King, Gina Marchant, Eugene and John Mason, eighteen great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-one years John Aquilla in 1989, by an infant grandson Jackie Mutnansky in 1963, by her parents Joseph and Sofia (nee Loczi) Mason, by brothers Joseph and Eugene Mason and by her sister Elizabeth Betty Mason.
Visitation will be Monday Feb. 23, 2009 from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday beginning with closing prayers offered in the funeral chapel at 9:30 a.m. A funeral mass will follow at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 41295 North Ridge Road with the Reverend James Ols presiding. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
