Anthony Chervenak, 86, Purple Heart Award Recipient

Photo of Anthony  Chervenak Anthony Chervenak, 86 of Vermilion, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky following a lengthy illness.

He was on born Jan. 28, 1923 in Czechoslovakia, immigrating to the United States with his family in 1931. He has been a Vermilion resident since 1933.

He served in the United States Army and was a recipient of the Purple Heart award. Tony worked as a machinist for over 30 years for the Fodler Company in Elyria, retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Vermilion. He was also a honorary life member of Vermilion Knights of Columbus Chapter # 4539, VFW Post 7576 and American Legion Post 397. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his sister, Catherine Martincak of Lorain and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded-in-death by his parents, Nicholas and Mary (nee Svaral) Chervenak, a brother, Paul Chervenak and nephew, David Martincak.

Friends may call Sunday, March 1, 2009 from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. A Christian wake service will be held at 3:30 p.m. and the Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military services at 7 p.m. Closing prayers will be said at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2009 followed by a 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion, Father Phil Feltman, pastor St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sandusky, officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery.
