George J. Haller, 91, WW II Veteran of the US Army
George J. Carty Haller, age 91, of Lorain, died Tuesday March 3, 2009 at Community Regional Medical Center in Lorain.
He was born in Lorain on Nov. 2, 1917 and remained a life-long resident of the city.
Carty was a World War II veteran of the United States Army where he fulfilled duty assignments as a Technician 4th Grade attached to the 396th Port Battalion Transportation Company in North Africa, Sicily, the Rhineland, and Southern France. He was the recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with four Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead, as well as the Good Conduct Medal. He was a Life Member of Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Haller was employed as a cut-off operator in the # 3 Seamless Mill at U.S. Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works; he retired in 1980 following a career that spanned forty-three years with the steel producer. He was a former member of United Steelworkers Local # 1104.
He was an active parishioner of St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in Lorain where he was a member of the Holy Name Society as well as a loyal volunteer with the church bingo program.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years Katherine (nee Barbuscak), daughter Karen Haller of Lorain, son George A. Haller residing in Shelbyville, Kentucky, grandsons Brian and Sean Haller, and brother Paul Haller of Elyria.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Mary Haller, by brothers Thomas, Steve, Joseph, John, and Mathew, and by sisters Katherine Kay Udovich and Ann Bandersky.
Visitation will be Friday from 2 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue Lorain where a Parish Rosary will be recited at 2:30 p.m. to be followed by Parastas services at 3 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday beginning with Panachida at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the Divine Liturgy at 11 a.m. in Saint Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church 2711 West 40th Street. The Reverend Nicholas Rachford, pastor of St. Nicholas Parish will officiate.
Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain where military honors will be conducted by representatives of the Department of the Army assisted by the officers and members of Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
