George C. Butchko, 97, Lorain Golden Glove Boxer

Photo of George C. Butchko George C. Butchko, 97, of Lorain, went to Heaven to be with Jesus and his boys and family on Saturday March 21, 2009 at the Kingston of Vermilion Nursing Home.

He was born June 8, 1911 in Star Junction, Pennsylvania and had resided in Lorain most of his life. He attended Lorain High School.

George worked at US Steel in Lorain as a materials expeditor retiring in 1971. He then worked for the Lorain Water Department retiring in 1977 after 5 years.

George and his wife Evelyn were top ballroom dancing competitors in the state of Ohio and most recently won a competition in 1994 at the age of 83. They also bowled together in couples’ leagues at Rebman Recreation in Lorain.

George was a Golden Glove boxer in the Lorain area, an avid Cleveland Indians fan, enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cards and watching sports, especially his grandchildren’s sporting events.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years Evelyn Butchko (nee Mravich), daughters Mary Jo Kamnikar (Ken) of Lorain, Sally Bescak (George) of Amherst and Nancy Breeden (Timothy) of Vermilion, daughter-in-law Marilyn Butchko of Lorain, grandchildren Deatra Kopis, Darla Gerace (Lenny), Dawn Redmond (Keith), Deborah Bryant (Scott), Bob Kamnikar (Sherri), Kelli Gannelli (Rocky), Todd Bescak (Allison), Nancy Geraghty (Gary), Amanda Bescak, Maggie Frey (Josh), Mollie Breeden and Katie Breeden and 32 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sons Robert and Thomas Butchko, brothers Chuck, Frank and Paul and sisters Irene and Christine.

The family will receive friends Monday 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where the St. Peter Holy Name Society will recite the rosary Monday at 10 a.m. Funeral prayer services will be held in the funeral chapel Monday at 12:15 p.m. followed by a mass of Christian Burial Monday at 1 p.m. at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor, will officiate. Private burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain. Immediately following mass the family invites friends to join them in fellowship at Rosewood Place, 4493 Oberlin Ave., Lorain.
