George T. Forester, 73, Enjoyed Fast Pitch Softball

Photo of George T. Forester George T. “Curley” Forester, 73, of Lorain, died Wednesday April 1, 2009 at Oak Hills Nursing Center in Lorain after a lengthy illness.

He was born May 22, 1935 in Lorain and had lived in Lorain most of his life. He also lived in Avon Lake for 26 years and Amherst for 8 years.

George served with the US Air Force from 1951-1952. He worked as a custodian at Powers Elementary School in the Amherst School District. He also worked at Bendix-Westinghouse in Elyria. During the 1950’s he worked as a cab driver in Lorain and in 1985 he worked as a superintendent of an apartment complex in Cleveland Heights.

As a youth George was active in CYO sports. When he was older he participated in fast pitch softball leagues in Lorain and played in softball tournaments all over the state of Ohio. He also was a professional boxer for 5 � years.

He was a member of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Lorain. He was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous that he joined in April of 1979 at the encouragement of his sponsor Pauline Szabo. He was also a member and founder of the Monday Night Rainbow Group, the Tuesday “Who Me?” group and the Thursday Night Serenity Group, all in Lorain. He was a member of the Alcoholics Anonymous social committee that was instrumental in scheduling dances and other social gatherings. George also formed a slow pitch softball league for AA members and their families.

He was a member of the Lorain County Zipper Club, American Legion Post #30 in Lorain, American Legion Post #211 in Avon Lake for over 40 years and the Lorain Senior Citizens Club.

He is survived by his daughter Dee Spears of Vermilion. He was preceded in death by his parents George E and Thelma Forester (nee Duffy) and brother Russell D. Forester.

A graveside funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, 640 N. Ridge Rd., Lorain with the Rev. Daniel O. Divis, pastor of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Lorain, presiding. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post #451 and American Legion Post # 30, both of Lorain.

Arrangements are under the direction of Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain.
