Jack E. Minnich, 83, Enjoyed Sports

He was born Sept. 1, 1925 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.
Jack served with the US Army during World War II in the 104th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon w/2 Bronze Stars and the Philippine Liberation Medal w/1 Bronze Star.
Upon his return from service he completed his high school education and graduated from St. Mary High School in Lorain in 1947.
Jack worked at US Steel in Lorain for 40 years retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain, the Sons of Italy and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #451 of Lorain.
Jack played fast pitch softball for numerous teams in Lorain and enjoyed watching sports on television and working the crossword puzzle in the daily newspaper.
He is survived by his sons Dennis and Robert, both of Lorain, granddaughter Mandy Lopez of Avon, great grandchildren Yecelena Lopez, Adrian Lopez and Alicia Vazquez, son-in-law Jesse Lopez and niece Sharon Pintur, both of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Minnich (nee Kiser), daughter Jacqueline Minnich on March 21, 2009, parents Frank & Alice Minnich (nee Walsh) and brother Butch Minnich.
The family will receive friends Sunday 4 - 8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Chuck Henkle, associate pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township where the VFW#451 and American Legion Post #30 will conduct military honors.
