Julius J. Gajdos, 83, Enjoyed Big Band Music

Photo of Julius J. Gajdos Julius J. Gajdos, 83, of Lorain, died Wednesday April 15, 2009 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a sudden illness.

He was born Dec. 13, 1926 in Duquense, Pennsylvania and had resided in Lorain since 1941.

Julius graduated from Lorain High School with the class of 1945B. He served with the US Army during World War II as a Tech 5 and Draftsman. He drew topographical drawings and maps from arial photographs and made detailed drawings of military installations. He was awarded the Army Occupation Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII and Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Bar.

He attended the Technical Institute at Fenn College in Cleveland and earned a diploma in Technical Drafting.

Julius worked for Lorain City Schools for 8 years in custodial and maintenance retiring in 1991. For over 20 years he was an insurance agent for Metropolitan Insurance Company. He had also worked at US Steel in Lorain as a bricklayer assistant for 1 year and in the rolling mills for 1 year.

He was a member of St. Michael Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in Lorain and a founding member of the St. Michael Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #451 in Lorain.

Julius enjoyed big band music and along with his wife June attended many dances throughout the area. He enjoyed boating, fishing, skiing, dancing and having family gatherings and activities with his friends. He was very family oriented and was loved dearly by his family and friends. His skills as a draftsman led him to design and construct an addition to his home.

After his retirement Julius enjoyed being idle.

He is survived by his son Craig Gajdos (Cindy) of Denton, Texas, stepdaughter Laura Deegan of Vermilion, grandchildren Michelle Gajdos and Kevin Gajdos, stepgrandchildren Erin Deegan and Sean Deegan, 5 great grandchildren and sisters Barbara Delis of Florida and Anna Mae Borsos of Lorain.

He was preceded in death by his wife June B. Gajdos (nee Baird) on February 15, 2009, parents Julius and Bessie Gajdos (nee Sopko) and brother Thomas Gajdos.

The family will receive friends Saturday 1 - 5 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Monday at 12:30 p.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Chuck Henkle, associate pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #451 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
