Joseph M. Monia, 67, Vietnam War Veteran

Photo of Joseph M. Monia Joseph M. Monia, 67, of Lorain, died Friday June 26, 2009 in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Community Health Partners Hospital in Lorain after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Jan. 4, 1942 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.

Joseph was a 1960 graduate of Lorain High School and earned an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology from Lorain County Community College.

In 1960 he served with the US Army 2nd Special Forces and requested to be sent to Vietnam on an advisory team and serve as a weapons instructor. He achieved the rank of Sgt E-5. In 1964 he served in Cleveland US Army Reserves in the 2nd Special Forces – Airborne Division as a Skydiver. During the 1980’s he served in the US Army Reserves Medivac Unit as a medic. He was very proud of his military service.

Joe was a Police Officer with the Sheffield Lake Police Department and retired in 2001 with the rank of Lieutenant. Prior to that he worked as a Police Officer for the Lorain Police Department from 1966-1976. On his vacations and days off he worked as a co-pilot for the DeBartolo Corporation in Youngstown for 25 years. He also worked full-time for PC Campana as a pilot and purchasing agent and was the chief pilot for the Nordson Corporation.

He loved new cars.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years Susan (nee Eifert), son Jason Monia (Marlena) of Wadsworth, granddaughter Jayden Monia of Wadsworth, brother Charles Monia (Joan) of San Jose, California and sisters Mary Ann Stanton (William) of Amherst and Jane Bender (Mark) of Indianapolis, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents Anthony and Carmela Monia (nee Tassone).

The family will receive friends Monday 2 - 4 p.m., 7 - 9 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Chuck Henkle, associate pastor, will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
