John A. Pappas, 78, Past President of Cleveland Mail Council

John A. Pappas, age 78, of Malvern, Ohio, and formerly of Lorain, died Monday July 13th at Lutheran Hospital in Cleveland following a brief illness.

He was born in Lorain on July 8, 1931 and had been a resident of Malvern for the past seven years. He had previously been a resident of Brecksville.

John was a graduate of Lorain High School and went on to attend both Ohio University and The Ohio State University. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he fulfilled duty assignments as a Corporal attached to the 160th Engineer’s Group in Korea. He was the recipient of the National Service Defense Medal, the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of American Legion Post # 375 of Malvern.

A member and past President of the Cleveland Postal Council, Mr. Pappas was employed as a consultant for the Mail Gard Corporation of Pennsylvania. He was also the founder and owner of the Ohio-based MSE Corporation.

Mr. Pappas was active with Free Masonry and was a member of Grand Lodge F. & A.M. of Ohio, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Cleveland, the Al Koran Shrine, and the Shriners of North America.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years Beverly (nee Pennay), son Dean Pappas (wife Karen) of Watertown, Wisconsin, daughters Julia Haehn (husband Mark) of Springfield, Illinois, and Lynn Pappas of Greensboro, North Carolina, grandchildren Richard Haehn, Rebecca Haehn, and Danielle Pappas, and by his brother George residing in Lakewood.

He was preceded in death by his father Angelo Pappas in 1972, by his mother Elizabeth (nee Vakerics) Pappas in 1998, and by his brother Alexander in 1977.

Funeral services will be Friday July 17th at 4:30 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. The Reverend H. Richard Bucey will officiate. Interment will take place in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township.

The family encourages memorial contributions to the Shriner’s Children’s Burn Institute, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati 45229-3095.
