Harry D. Murawski, 87, Decorated WW II Veteran

Harry D. Murawski, 87, of Lorain, died Friday July 24, 2009 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain.

He was born Aug. 4, 1921 in Elyria and had resided in Lorain for the past 60 years.

Harry graduated from Elyria High School in 1941. He served with the US Army during World War II as a Staff Sergeant and saw action in Southern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Rome-Arno. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with one oak leaf cluster, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, WWII Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Harry worked at General Industries in Elyria as a machinist for 45 years before retiring.

He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lorain and the church Holy Name Society.

Harry enjoyed golfing and had 3 hole-in-ones to his credit. He golfed in the General Industries League and bowled in several leagues including the PLAV league, Lorain Polish Club league, Elyria Polish Club league and Thursday Seniors League at Rebman Recreation. Harry played fast pitch softball in Elyria and was a pitcher who earned the nickname “Bob Feller”.

Harry was an avid fan of Cleveland sports teams.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Helen Murawski (nee Zaborniak), son John Murawski of Lorain, daughters Barbara Jacobs of Topeka, Kansas and Janice Didich (Aaron) of Bellefontaine, Ohio and grandson Aaron Didich of Cuyahoga Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Josephine Murawski, sisters Mary Talarek, Theresa Rodak and Dorothy Murawski and brother Edward Murawski.

The family will receive friends Monday 4 - 8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where the St. Stanislaus Holy Name Society will recite the rosary Monday at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 2702 Elyria Ave., Lorain. The Rev. David A. Novak, parish administrator, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
