Harriet C. Michaels, 85, Teacher
Harriet C. Michaels (nee Cook), 85, of Lorain, died Sunday July 26, 2009 in the emergency room at Community Regional Medical Center in Lorain.She was born August 26, 1923 in Los Angeles, California and had resided in Lorain since 1947.
Harriet was a graduate of Oberlin College and received her Masters in Education from Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Harriet was a school teacher, special needs teacher, singing teacher and tutor in the Sheffield Lake and South Amherst school districts. Harriet became the first Activities Director at Golden Acres Nursing Home in Amherst and volunteered for many years leading music at Golden Acres, Autumn Aegis and other nursing homes. She volunteered at Lowell School in reading and music.
Harriet was a member of First Congregational Church in Lorain where she served on the Christian Education Board and sang in the church choir. She was a charter member of the Lorain Harbor Lions Club, a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the American Association of University Women, the Lorain County Computer Users Group, the Workshop Players and the Oberlin Musical Union. She enjoyed singing, playing Scrabble and gardening.
She is survived by her children Nadya Cole (Ford) of Lorain, Nancy Mayak (John) of Fremont, Dorothy Louis (Kamille) of Brunswick, Gregory Michaels of San Diego, California and Timothy Michaels of San Rafael, California, daughter-in-law Nancy Michaels of Lorain, grandchildren: Susan Robinson (Alan), John Michaels, Melissa Gilkes (Ernie), Stephanie Steffes (Brice), Jennifer Michaels (Jason Werner), Lucas and Calvin Michaels, Cathy Lynn Laburdy (Lance), Ted Landers (Anna), Madeleine Michaels, Christine and Franco Louis and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Ted Michaels in 2004 (owner/operator of Michaels Studios in Lorain), son Peter Michaels in 2002, parents Palmer Cook and Dorothy Cook-Boden (nee Jones), stepfather Reynold Boden, grandson Michael Landers in 2001 and sister Pauline Heighton.
The family will receive friends Thursday 2 - 4 p.m., 7 - 9 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where the Lorain Harbor Lions Club will conduct a memorial service Thursday at 7 p.m. Additional viewing hours will be held on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 10 a.m. at First Congregational Church, 423 Washington Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Carl Richter, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens in Avon.
