Barbara L. Thomas, 75, Korean War Veteran

Barbara L. Thomas (nee Kresman), 75, of Lorain, died Monday Aug. 3, 2009 at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center Wade Park Facility.

She was born Dec. 9, 1933 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.

Barbara graduated from Clearview High School and served with the US Marine Corps from 1952 to 1955 as a sergeant during the Korean War. She received the National Defense Service Ribbon and the Good Conduct 1st Award.

Barbara was a graduate of the Lorain County Community College nursing program. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Lorain Community Hospital and Allen Memorial Hospital in Oberlin where she retired in 2004.

She was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Lorain.

She is survived by her children Brian (Theresa), Beverly (Craig), Bonnie and Brad, grandchildren Christopher, Jessica, Kathryn, Elizabeth, Matthew, Taylor, Britni and Brad, sisters Anne Towne, Olga Tymms, Margaret Kocorek and Helen Oros, sister-in-laws Betty Sauvey and Clara Mahnic and many nieces, nephews and loving friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Thomas, parents Charles and Barbara Kressman (nee Hrisko), sister Sue Huber and brothers John Kresman and Michael Kresman.

The family will receive friends Thursday 4 - 8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church, 2143 Homewood Drive, Lorain. The Rev. Thomas Smith, pastor of St. John Catholic Church and the Rev. Lawrence Martello, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst, will concelebrate. Private family burial will be held at a later date in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
