Martha V. Kuncel, 84, Avid Golfer
Martha V. Kuncel, (nee Sofranko), age 84, of Lorain, died Friday August 7th at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph.
She was born in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania on April 7, 1925 and came to Lorain in 1926. Martha was a graduate of Lorain High School as a member of the Class of 1943-B.
Mrs. Kuncel was formerly employed as a floral designer for the Zelek Flower Shop for many years; she later served as a sales associate for the Renaissance Gift Shop.
Martha was an active parishioner of the Catholic Church of St. Peter where she served on the Parish Festival Committee, was a member of the Senior Citizen’s Group, and volunteered as a facilitator for the RENEW Program. She was a former parishioner of Holy Trinity Church where she was a member of the Mother’s Club, the Altar & Rosary Society, and served as a long-time secretary for the P.T.O. at the parish day school.
She was a volunteer at the former St. Joseph Hospital and was a member of the Lorain Y.M.C.A., the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Slovak Club, the Lorain Public Library Book Club, and St. Ann’s Lodge Branch # 114 of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Union.
Mrs. Kuncel was also an avid golfer and enjoyed participating in league competition at Deer Track Golf Club.
She is survived by sons Mark (wife Sue), Dan (wife Roseanne), Kurt (wife Sarah), by daughters Ruth Wilhelm (husband Rodger), Chris Vieta (husband Bob), and Martha Sis Coteff (husband Bob), sixteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, by brothers Paul , Ray, William, and Thomas, and numerous nieces and nephews..
She was preceded in death by her husband Alfred in 1966, by her parents John and Elizabeth (nee Kish) Sofranko, and by brothers Edward, John, and Eugene.
Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. A Rosary will be recited by the officers and members of St. Ann’s Lodge at 4:00 p.m. Funeral services begin Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. The Reverend Charles Henkle, Associate Pastor of the parish will officiate. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
