John W. Degan, 80, Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne & 11th Airborne
John W. Degan, 80, of Lorain, died Thursday Aug. 27, 2009 at Autumn Aegis Nursing Home in Lorain after a lengthy illness.He was born Dec. 10, 1928 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.
John served with the US Army Air Corps during World War II as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne and 11th Airborne Divisions.
He worked as a captain in the Merchant Marines and sailed the Great Lakes.
John was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain and a life member of the following: VFW #451, American Legion #30, DAV #20, all of Lorain, the West Side Irish-American Club, the Irish Heritage Club, Knights of St. John #281 in Lorain, the 82nd Airborne Division Association and the 11th Airborne Division Association. He was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous and a member of Eagle Scout Troop #343 in Lorain.
John is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Angeline Degan, parents John & Catherine Degan (nee Pozega) and sisters Patricia O’Connor and Theresa Tony.
The family will receive friends Sunday 4 - 8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1305 E. Erie Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Joseph West, OFM Conv., pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where VFW Post #451 and American Legion #30, both of Lorain, will conduct military honors.
