Ruth M. Groene, 87, Enjoyed Spending Time with her Grandchildren

Photo of Ruth M.  Groene Ruth M. Groene (nee Nather), 87, of Lorain, died Monday Oct. 12, 2009 at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland after a short illness.

She was born June 5, 1922 in Lorain and had been a lifelong resident of Lorain’s east side.

Ruth graduated from the Lorain High School class of 1940 B. She worked as a secretary at American Shipbuilding in Lorain and as a clerk at Centel in Lorain.

Ruth was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Marian Guild and Cursillo Movement #3. She was a member of Elks BPO Lodge #1301 Ladies Auxiliary in Lorain where she served two terms as president, a member and trustee of Knights of St. John #281 Ladies Auxiliary in Lorain where she served as secretary and treasurer and a life member of VFW Post #7035 in Avon Ladies Auxiliary. Ruth volunteered with Lifeline at Community Health Partners Hospital in Lorain.

She enjoyed golfing, bowling and card parties and was an avid reader, Cleveland Indians fan, Cleveland Browns fan, loved traveling, gambling trips and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons: David P. Groene (Lilah) of Lakeside, Marblehead, Ohio and Darrel E. Groene (Kathleen) of Lorain, daughter Cheryl A. Antus of Lorain, 6 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and brother Edwin Nather (Elsie) of Lorain. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years Harry “Bud” Groene, parents August & Anna Nather (nee Kihn) and sister Lois Niesen.

The family will receive friends Friday 4 - 8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1305 E. Erie Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Joseph West, OFM Conv., pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
