Sylvia M. Barnicle-Hambly, 73, Enjoyed Interior Decorating

Photo of Sylvia M. Barnicle-Hambly Sylvia M. Barnicle-Hambly,(nee Reed), age 73, of Amherst Township, died Saturday Dec. 5th at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph following an extended illness.

She was born in Lorain on March 17, 1936 and had been a resident of Amherst Township since 2004. She had previously been a resident of Benson, Arizona for twelve years and had also formerly resided in Huron.

Sylvia was a graduate of Lorain St. Mary High School as a member of the Class of 1954. She later attended the Lorain Business College where she followed the electronics technology curriculum.

She had most recently been employed as a conservationist with the Natural Resources and Conservation District of Arizona. Prior to her move to the southwest she had been employed as an Electronic Technician for the Great Lakes Data Center of the May Department Store Company in Sheffield Township. She had previously been employed as a Key Line Artist and Production Manager for the Morning Journal and had also been employed in similar capacities by the Lorain Printing Company as well as the Gowe Printing Company.

Mrs. Barnicle-Hambly was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst. She was an active volunteer there with the church’s Outreach Program and contributed numerous hours crafting rosaries and composing greeting cards for individuals throughout the area. For more than three decades she had also been a member of Alcoholics Anonymous as well as Al-Anon.

In her free time she enjoyed interior decorating, boating, and horseback riding.

She is survived by daughters Diane Vondrasek (husband Dennis) of Strongsville, Coleen Falbo (husband John) of Lorain, and Cynthia Waters (husband Kevin) of Amherst, sons Christopher Barnicle (wife Melanie) of Amherst, and Chad Barnicle (wife Becky) of Sebring, Florida, by step-sons Tom Hambly (wife Sandy) of Lorain, Charles Hambly (wife Lydia) residing in California, Joe Hambly (wife Sharon) of Amherst, and Bob Hambly (wife Karen) of Berlin Heights, step-daughter Connie Hambly of Vermilion, along with 24 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, brother Dennis Reed (wife Pat) of Huron, and sister Pat Dion-Stanislawski residing in Massachusetts. She was also a sister-in-law to many and leaves numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her first husband Donald Barnicle in 1990, by her second husband Charles Hambly in 2004, by her daughter Connie Barnicle in 2008, by her parents Wilbert and Luella (nee Wagner) Reed, and by her brother Terrance Reed.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Wednesday beginning with closing prayers offerd at 11:15 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of her Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. The Reverend Lawrence Martello, Pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will take place later at the convenience of the family.
