Charles P. Butchko, 77, Enjoyed Sports

Photo of Charles P. Butchko Charles P. Butchko, 77, of Lorain, died Friday Nov. 13, 2009 at his home after a short battle with cancer.

He was born March 10, 1932 in Avon and had resided in Lorain most of his life.

Charles attended St. Ladislaus Grade School in Lorain. He graduated from St. Mary High School in Lorain where he excelled in basketball, football and baseball playing 3rd base and batting clean-up. He earned a scholarship to Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana and attended prep school in Georgia. He attended John Carroll University and was a point guard on their basketball team for three years.

During his adult years he played softball and fast pitch for B&M Grill and Villa Capri. He was also an avid golfer. He enjoyed gardening, spending time with his family, cross-word puzzles and reading. He was an avid Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers, Indians and Ohio State fan.

Charles worked as a crane operator for Stein Inc Contractors for US Steel in Lorain for 32 years.

He was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain.

He is survived by his children Charlene Spinale (Dominic) of Lorain, Cynthia Ruess (Pete) of Jensen Beach, Florida, Charles M. Butchko of Lorain, Connie Huber (Joe) of Amherst and Caron Kreicher (Bryan) of Vermilion, 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and brother Jerome Butchko (Randi) of Birmingham, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years Josephine A. Butchko (nee Shullick) on July 22, 2005, whom he missed dearly, infant sons Charles and Clifford Butchko, parents Charles and Sarah Butchko (nee Szabo), sister Rosemary Lenzen and brother Louis Butchko.

The family will receive friends Sunday 4-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Chuck Henkle, OFM Conv, associate pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
