Helen V. Milli-Higgins, 93, Enjoyed Cooking for her Family

Photo of Helen V. Milli-Higgins Helen V. Milli-Higgins (nee Michalska), 93, of Mansfield and formerly of Amherst and Lorain, died Sunday Nov. 15, 2009 at The Wedgewood Estates Assisted Living in Mansfield.

She was born March 25, 1916 in Detroit, Michigan and resided in Lorain from 1951 to 1993. She lived in Amherst from 1993 until 2002 when she moved to Mansfield, Ohio and resided at The Waterford.

Helen was a member of St. Vitus Catholic Church in Lorain and St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Mansfield. She was a member of the St. Theresa Guild. She volunteered at the Curiosity Shop for Our Lady of the Wayside in Avon. Helen enjoyed gardening and cooking for her family.

Helen was proud of her Polish heritage and enjoyed making potato pancakes and pierogies for her family.

Helen was a caring and compassionate person her entire life, devoting herself to her parents and her husband’s parents. She loved and nurtured her three children. Helen was employed by the Lorain city schools for many years.

Always a good listener, Helen also had wit and wisdom to share with others, such as, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Also, “Liver and onions are good for you…eat.” And finally, “Eat your carrot—it’s good for your eyes. Did you ever see a blind rabbit?”

She is survived by her sons Alex Milli (Lana) of Mansfield and George Milli (Pam) of Westerville, daughter Carol Ann Cox (Steven) of Clarksville, Indiana, 5 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and a brother Valentine Michalski of Detroit. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 28 years, Alex Milli and her second husband of 37 years, George M. Higgins; parents Frank and Mary Michalski (nee Ficek); and brothers Frank and Walter Michalski and sister Anne Nowak.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of prayer services at 11 a.m. at Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. A mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m. at St. Vitus Catholic Church, 1785 E. 32nd St., Lorain. The Rev. Thomas Smith, parish administrator, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
