Santiago Maldonado, 93, Owned Barber Shop

Photo of Santiago  Maldonado Santiago “Papi Chago” Maldonado 93 of Lorain died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009 in Avon Oaks Caring Community following a lengthy illness.

He was born Jan. 1, 1916 in Utuado, Puerto Rico and was raised in Barcelonita, Puerto Rico.

He moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1948. He lived there for 11 years before coming to Lorain. He returned to Barcelonita in 1969. He came back to Lorain in March of this year to live with his daughter.

Mr. Maldonado was a licensed barber and worked in Puerto Rico and owned and operated a barber shop in Brooklyn. He served his country in the Army during World War II. He enjoyed going to church, reading his bible, watching Cleveland Indians baseball and playing Dominos with his grandchildren.

Among the survivors are his son Jose Maldonado of Spencer, West Virginia, daughter Maria Cirilo of Lorain, 16 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and three great great granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Maria (nee Rivera) Maldonado in 2007, his parents Juan Maldonado and Elena Rodriguez, five brothers and one sister.

His family will receive friends Sunday from 3 PM until time of his funeral service at 5 PM Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain, (440) 277 8164. Monday he will be taken to Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Rittman for burial. Please meet at the entrance at 9:45 AM.
