Leo J. ''Joe'' Kastl, 88, WWII Veteran
Leo J. " Joe" Kastl, 88, of Lorain died Monday evening, December 21, 2009 at Community Health Partners Regional Medical Center in Lorain following a prolonged illness.Mr. Kastl was born in Lorain on July 12, 1921, the son of the late Joseph and Barbara (nee Recznek) Kastl.
He attended Lorain Public Schools. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II, receiving medals for service in the American Theater and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater with three stars, He also earned the 7th Fleet Commendation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Kastl was a active member of Faith United Methodist Church having served as an usher, president of Men's Club, Administrative Board and enjoyed helping the various dinners served at the church.
He was retired as an electrical manager at US Steel following 35 years of service.
Mr. Kastl was a member of the F & AM Black River Lodge # 786 and Scottish Rite Valley of Cleveland. He was also involved with Senior Fellowship and was a Life Member of VFW Post 451.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
Mr. Kastl is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen I. (nee Ilcisko) Kastl, two sons David A ( Mary Anne) Kastl of Lorain, Clifton J (Audrey) Kastl of Elyria Twp., grandchildren Tracey Nero, Joel Kastl, Allison Mimms, Abby Kastle, Adam Kastl, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Evelyn Sauer, Rosemary Acs and a brother Emil Kastl.
Friends may call Sunday, December 27, 2009 from 4-8 pm in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain. His Masonic Lodge will have a memorial service at 7:00 pm.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 on Monday, December 28, 2009 in the funeral home with Pastor Chris LaLond and Dr. Dale Sauer officiating.
Burial will be in the Ridge Hill Memorial Park with full military honors provided jointly by VFW Post 451 and the American Legion Post # 30.
Family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the Faith United Methodist Church, 2201 Reid Ave., Lorain or the Shriners Hospital, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229-3095.
