Lenore M. Haefka, 85, Tole Painting Artist
Lenore M. "Sally" Haefka, 85, (nee Scanlan) of Lorain passed away Wednesday evening, Jan. 27, 2010 at the Amherst Manor Retirement Community in Amherst following a long illness.
Mrs. Haefka was born in Lorain on Aug. 3, 1924, the daughter of the late William H and Bernice (nee Bowditch) Scanlan. She attended Lorain High School (Class of 42). She married Raymond and raised her family in Sheffield Lake, Ohio.
Sally worked as a telephone operator at Lorain Telephone Company. She enjoyed skating at The Lorain Arena. She later was a Water Safety Instructor and Life Guard at Aqua Marine Resort in Avon, Ohio. She was the first Manager of the Resort. Sally was an accomplished golfer who competed and won trophies and championships.
She moved to Sterling, Ohio with her husband Ray when he was promoted. Sally and Ray became part time farmers. Sally always had friends and family there for cookouts, hay rides, farm animals, picnics, and home made ice cream. She had many talents and was a tole painting artist. Sally loved country crafts like quilting, knitting, basket making, crocheting and gardening.
When Sally and Ray returned to Lorain, she became a boater and fisherman. She was also a member of the King Midget Club of America. She had her own King Midget car too! She was an avid Cleveland Indians fan, hardly ever missing a game.
She is survived by daughters Rae Lynn Goldthorpe of Amherst, Sharon (Terry) Huffman of The Villages, FL grandchildren, Jeffrey, Shelly and Sheila, great grandchildren Shannon and Shawn and a brother James (Jane) Scanlan of San Diego, CA.
Mrs. Haefka was preceded in death by her cherished and loving husband of 58 years, Raymond in 2000, grandchildren James and Michelle and great grandsons Nathan and Dakota.
Services will be private. Arrangements are being handled by the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain.
