George J. Silac, 89, US Steel Retiree

He was born Oct. 21, 1920 to Stephen and Helen Silac in Lorain and had resided in Sheffield Township most of his life.
George attended Clearview High School. He served for 6 years with the US Navy during World War II as a Pharmacist’s Mate 1st Class. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Area Medal, American Defense Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
George worked at US Steel in Lorain in the blast furnace electric shop as a motor inspector retiring in 1982 after 36 years.
He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria Township where he served as an usher and was a past member of the Holy Name Society. He was a member of USWA Local #1104, a life member of Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 and a life member of the Golden Age Pensioners, all of Lorain.
George enjoyed reading, working puzzles, sports and bowling and had participated in many leagues.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Helen (nee Druda), daughter Dianne Timko (George) of Amherst, son George A. Silac (Therese) of Sheffield Lake, grandsons Jonathan Silac of Sheffield Lake and Geoffrey Silac (Jennifer) of Vermilion, sisters Theresa Skryantz of Avon Lake and Dorothy Mihalcik of Sheffield Township, brother Peter Silac (Helen) of North Ridgeville and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Stephen and Yela (Helen) Silac (nee Macak), brothers John Silac in 1998 and Stephen Silac in 2002, sister Carol Mauser and brothers and sisters in infancy.
The family will receive friends Friday 3 - 6 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 41295 N. Ridge Rd., Elyria. The Rev. James Ols, pastor, and the Rev. John Slatcoff, deacon, will concelebrate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
