Lizzie Compton, 85, Enjoyed Cooking and Gardening

Photo of Lizzie Compton Lizzie (nee Lester) 85, of Vermilion, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010 in New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph after a lengthy illness.

She was born Jan. 10, 1925 in Big Rock, VA and has been a Vermilion resident since 1955.

Lizzie enjoyed cooking, gardening, garage sales and spending time with family and friends.

She was a strong advocate for MRDD citizens, volunteering transportation for Lucy Idol Center in Vermilion and Double S Industries in Sandusky. She continued caring for her handicapped son Carl until she had acute stroke in September 2009.

She worked as a cook for many years, working at Vermilion Valley Plaza, Margie’s Restaurant, Vermilion, Chris' Restaurant, Lorain and Harry's on Baumhart, Lorain. She also cleaned Key Bank in Vermilion until retiring in 2004.

Lizzie is survived her 2 daughters, Rosemary (Jeff) Burch of Huron and Patricia Mejak of Wakeman, 3 sons: Larry and Carl of Vermilion and Donnie Raines, of Wakeman; 6 grandchildren, Tony (Kathleen) Raines, Jackie Raines, Jennifer Coleman, Royce Raines; Sarah Beese, and Emily (Shawn) Perry; 5 great grandchildren; Cheyenne, Royce Jr., Teaghan, Christopher and Sophia and 2 sisters, Joyce Sykes of Columbus and Pam (Dave) Mays of Virginia and a brother, Jeff Lester of Virginia.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Raines in 1958; son, Eddie Raines, grandsons, Christopher M. Raines and Benjamin I. Burch; parents, James Harrison and Betty (nee Lee) Lester; sisters, Julie Viers and Okie Owens; brothers, Berlin Lester and Ferrel Lester and companion Charles B. Youngren, 2002.

Friends may call Monday, Feb. 15, 2010 from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Services will be held at the Riddle Funeral Home on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010 at 11 a.m. with Reverend David Johnson, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.
