Donald W. Gumble, Sr., 82, Enjoyed Being a Ham Radio Operator

Photo of Donald W. Gumble, Sr. Donald W. Gumble, Sr., 82 of Avon Lake passed away Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010 in EMH Regional Medical Center, Elyria following a lengthy illness.

He was born March 30, 1927 in Cleveland. In 1954, he made Avon Lake his home.

Mr. Gumble worked as a Millwright for Midland Steel Products in Cleveland for 32 years until 1976. He worked for American Ship Building in Lorain for two years. He retired after 10 years as the manager of the Maintenance Department at Ohio Extended Care in Lorain in 1989.

During World War II, he graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy. He was a Marine and served during the Korean War.

Don was a member of the Avon Lake United Church of Christ and served on various boards and youth groups. He was also a member of U. A. W. Local 486, Cleveland. Mr. Gumble was a member of the Mid-Century Masonic Lodge 725 F. & A. M., Avon Lake for 50 Years and the Royal Arch Masonic Lodge 187, Lakewood. He was a life member of A. A. S. R. Valley of Cleveland and a past patron of Avon Lake Chapter 557 Order of the Eastern Star. He belonged to the American Legion Post 221 in Avon Lake. Mr. Gumble was an assistant Boy Scout Leader for the troop 300 of Avon Lake. He enjoyed being a Ham radio operator. His call sign was KB8SHN.

He will be dearly missed by his wife of 60 years Clara E. Gumble (nee Bossell) of Avon Lake, his son Donald W. (Deborah) Gumble, Jr. of Sheffield Lake, daughters Nancy (Herbert) Trautman of Springfield, Oregon and Gail (Dale) Bonar of Salem, Wisconsin, his 18 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son David M. Gumble in 2004 and his parents William and Margaret (nee Knob) Gumble.

A memorial and a Masonic service will be Saturday, March 6 at 11 a.m. in the Avon Lake United Church of Christ, 32801 Electric Blvd., Avon Lake. Rev. Kelly Brill pastor will officiate.

The family suggests memorial contributions to The American Breast Cancer Foundation, 1220-B East Joppa Rd., Suite 332, Baltimore, MD 21286.
