Richard E. Barnicle, 77, Retired U.S. Steel Corporation Employee

Photo of Richard E. Barnicle Richard E. Barnicle, age 77, of Lorain, died peacefully at his residence on Thursday Feb. 25th, 2010.

He was born in Carrollton, Pennsylvania on May 21, 1932 and had been a resident of Lorain since his childhood.

Mr. Barnicle was a veteran of the United States Army fulfilling duty assignments as a Sergeant attached to the 100th Heavy Tank Battalion during the Korean Conflict. He was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars as well as the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of American Legion Post #30 in Lorain.

He was employed as a sub-station operator in the Lorain-Cuyahoga Works of U.S. Steel Corporation. He retired in 1997 following a career that spanned 33 years with the steel producer.

In his free time, Richard enjoyed the outdoors and collecting 1/25th scale die cast cars.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years Irene (nee Arvay), by daughters Susan DeBartolo (Michael) of Chapel Hill, NC, Peggy Jurewicz (Stan) of Solon, and Kelley Fitch (Alan) of Englewood, FL, by his son Richard of Lorain, ten grandchildren, two great grandsons, brothers Daniel of Lorain, Joseph of Huron, James of Vermilion, and Michael of Berlin Hts., and by his sister Sally Mason of Lorain.

He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Irene (nee Dunegan) Barnicle, and by a brother Charles.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the funeral chapel with the Reverend Peter L. Toth, Pastor of Hungarian Reformed U.C.C. officiating. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park where joint military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post # 30 and Mullen-Murray VFW Post # 451.
