George Kundrat, 90, Enjoyed Bowling and Gardening

Photo of George Kundrat George Kundrat, 90, of Amherst, died Friday March 5, 2010 at Community Regional Medical Center in Lorain after a brief illness.

He was born Dec. 12, 1919 in Bajerovce, Czechoslovakia and had resided in Amherst since 1961 moving from Lorain.

George served with the US Army Air Corps as a Staff Sergeant in the 57th Troop Carrier Squadron in the Southern Philippines, Luzon, New Guinea, Northern Solomons and Bismarck Archipalago. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon w/6 Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon w/1 Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Ribbon.

George worked at US Steel in Lorain for over 40 years in the Machine Shop and in maintenance retiring in 1982.

He was an active member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in Lorain where he helped with bingo and made pierogie and nutroll. He was a member and past secretary/treasurer of the Greek Catholic Union. He enjoyed bowling and gardening.

George is survived by his wife of 48 years Anne Kundrat (nee Nash), son John Kundrat (Lisa) of Ellicott City, Maryland, daughter Joanne Kundrat of Brookeville, Maryland, 4 grandchildren, sister Mary Huber (Joseph) of Lorain, brother Steve Kundrat (Ann) of Hilton Head, North Carolina and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Suzanna Kundrat (nee Lash) and brother John Kundrat.

The family will receive friends Monday 4 - 8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where the St. Nicholas Rosary Society will pray the rosary Monday at 4:00 pm and the Parastas service will be held Monday at 4:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by church services at St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church, 2711 W. 40th St., Lorain. The Rev. Nicholas Rachford, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the VFW Post #451 and the American Legion #30, both of Lorain, will conduct military honors.
