Clarence F. Karendal, 82, Collected Antique Cars

Clarence F. “Chubby” Karendal, 82, of Lorain, died Tuesday April 20, 2010 at his home.

He was born Dec. 30, 1927 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.

As a young man, Chubby played basketball for the Lorain Glass team.

He worked on Iron Ore Freighters in the Great Lakes and then worked as a Job Setter at Ridgid Tool in Elyria retiring after 39 years.

Chubby was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, the Catholic Church of St. Peter, VFW Post #451, AMVETS #47, PLAV #38, PACC, UPC and the American Slovak Club, all in Lorain. He collected antique cars.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Bertha “Becky” Karendal, children Judy Simmons of Colorado, Nancy Klein of Lorain and Robin Welling (Brian) of Batavia, grandchildren David “DK” Klein of Lorain, Jaime Klein of Tucson, AZ, Meya Simmons and Seth Lumpkin, both of Lorain and great grandchildren Megan Klein of Toledo, Harrison Welling and Griffin Welling, both of Batavia.

He was preceded in death by his great grandson Anderson Welling and brother Edward Karendal.

Private family services were held. The Rev. Chuck Henkle, OFM Conv., associate pastor of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain, officiated. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus, 4720 Oberlin Ave., Lorain.

Arrangements were under the direction of Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain.
