Winifred A. Werley, 90, Licensed Practical Nurse
Winifred A. (Pilger) Werley (nee Zimmerman), age 90, of Lorain, died May 11, 2010.
She was born November 28, 1919 in Ravenna, Ohio. She had lived in Cleveland, Lakewood, and Brooklyn before moving to Lorain in 1961. She attended John Adams High School and Jane Adams School of Practical Nursing in Cleveland. She worked at Evangelical Deaconess Hospital in Cleveland as a Graduate Practical Nurse and retired in 1961 when she married Franklyn Werley and moved to Lorain.
She was an active member of St. John United Church of Christ in Lorain and in the Coffee Hour Group of the church. Winifred was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Ellbrook Chapter #408 and the former Lake Erie Shrine #47 of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem where she held several Supreme Shrine appointments and served as district Deputy of Shrines in Elyria, Lorain, Lakewood, and North Olmsted. She was a life member of the Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary in Lorain. She was also a member of the Lorain Community Senior Center, Lorain Lighthouse Chapter #399 of the A.A.R.P., and the Salvation Army Keenagers. From 1984 to 2003 she was a member of the Retired Senior and Volunteer Program (R.S.V.P.).
She enjoyed crafts and crocheting.
Survivors include her daughter JoAnn Johnson of Pinetop, AZ, son David Pilger of Sheffield Lake, OH, Sharon Kopis of Lynchburg, VA, stepsons Leroy Werley of Brooklyn, OH, Franklyn Werley of Woodhaven, MI, and James Werley of Lorain, OH, stepdaughter Geraldine Pettis of Glendale, AZ, 17 grandchildren and step-grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and step-great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and one cousin, Chas. (Bud) Sanford of Ravenna, OH.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Frank Joseph Pilger in 1954, by her second husband Franklyn Grover Werley in 1988, her parents Fred A. and Minnie M. (nee Jones) Zimmerman, her sisters Jean (Hawley) Pilger in 1988 and June Eileen Zimmerman in 1934, and brother Glen W. Hawley.
Friends may call Saturday from 12 p,m, until time of funeral services at 1 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. The Reverend Philip G. Kunz, pastor of St. John United Church of Christ, will officiate. Private burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township.
