Herbert J. Gilbert, 85, Enjoyed Hunting & Fishing

Herbert J. Gilbert, age 85, of Sullivan, and formerly of Lorain, died Sunday June 13th at EMH Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Gilbert was born in Vanceburg, Kentucky on December 15, 1924 and moved to Lorain in 1955. He had been a resident of Sullivan for the past year.

Herb was a veteran of the United States Army where he fulfilled duty assignments with the 375th Quartermaster Truck Company. He was the recipient of the American Theater Ribbon, the Word War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was employed as a carne operator in the Rolling Mill at U.S. Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works; he retired in 1984 following 34 years of service with the steel producer. He was a former member of United Steelworkers Local 1104.

Mr. Gilbert was an active member of the Praise and Worship Church in Elyria. Known as an accomplished mechanic, he enjoyed hunting and fishing in his free time.

He is survived by daughters Marsha Diaz (Herminio) residing in Sullivan, Diane Bryner, Tammy Scott (Randy) and Theresa Page (Glen) all of Lorain, sons James R. of Elyria and David (Joyce) of Wellington, 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, his special friend Desda Jane Godsey of Lorain, as well as by his brother Vincent (Betty) Riggs of Sardinia, Ohio, and sisters Ruth Cooper of Vanceburg, Kentucky, and Rose Roe residing in Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Lucille (nee Chinn), by his second wife Patricia (nee Adair), by his parents Thomas and Jessie M. (nee Pollet) Gilbert, by brothers Nathan, Harold, Curtis, Thomas, Paul, and Gene, and by sisters Anna Mae Horsley, Emma Lee Riggs, and Audrey Bryan.

Visitation will be Wednesday June 16th from 4 to 7 p.m.in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel with Reverend Charles Marcum and Reverend Jim Monday, Co-Pastors of the Praise and Worship Church presiding. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
