Erwin J. ''Gus'' Gutoske, 78, Accomplished Roller Skater
Erwin J. "Gus" Gutoske, 78, died suddenly at his home on Thursday, August 5, 2010.Mr. Gutoske was born in Lorain on November 21, 1931, the son of the late Erwin L and Genevieve D (nee Leska) Gutoske. He was a 1949 B graduate of Lorain High School. From 1949-1951, he worked at US Steel until he answered the call to serve his country.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Staff Sgt Gutoske earned the Good Conduct Medal, Korean Services Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.
Mr. Gutoske was employed for 25 years at NASA Lewis Research Center retiring in 1981.
He attended Zion Lutheran Church and was a lifelong member of the VFW Post 1662 in Amherst.
Mr. Gutoske was an accomplished roller skater, hold a Gold Metal rating. He taught skating at various rinks but primarily at Skate World in Lorain. He was a member of the Society of Roller Skating Teachers of America.
He is survived by several cousins and many friends.
Friends may call Wednesday, August 11, 2010 from 4-7 pm at the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain. A Celebration Of Life will following the visitation at 7:00 pm Wednesday at the funeral home with Rev. Kevin Saylor, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, officiating.
Burial will be private at Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, Amherst Township.
